Lesson 1 of 6 About 5 minutes

Your digital footprint

The big idea

Everything you post online leaves a trace that can be very hard to fully erase. Thinking for a moment before you share is one of the most useful habits you can build.

Imagine writing a note, making a hundred copies, and handing them out to strangers on the street. You couldn't get every copy back, and you couldn't control what any of those strangers did with it. Posting something online can work in a similar way. Once it's out, you can't always control where it ends up.

What is a digital footprint?

Your digital footprint is the trail of information left behind by everything you do online: posts, comments, photos, searches, and even the games you play. Some of it you create on purpose, like a post. Some of it is created without you thinking about it much, like a comment left on a video.

A footprint on a beach fades with the tide. A digital footprint often doesn't fade at all. Someone could screenshot a post before you delete it. A website could keep a copy in its own records. A friend could share it further than you meant it to go.

Why does this matter?

It's not about being scared to ever post anything. It's about knowing that what you share can stick around, and thinking for a moment before you share something can save you trouble later.

A helpful question to ask yourself before posting: would you be comfortable with a teacher, a parent, or a future employer seeing this someday? If the answer is no, that's worth pausing on.

Try this

With a parent or guardian, search your own name, or a family member's name with their permission, on a search engine. Talk about what comes up, and whether any of it surprises you. This isn't about anyone getting in trouble. It's just a real look at what a digital footprint can look like.

Think before you share

A few quick questions can help before posting anything:

  • Would I be okay with this being seen by someone I'm not expecting to see it?
  • Does this share information about exactly where I am right now?
  • Could this embarrass me, or someone else, later on?
  • Am I posting this because I actually want to, or because I feel pressured to?

Quick check
Can you always fully delete something you posted online?

Not always. Someone might have already screenshotted it, saved it, or shared it further, even after you delete the original.

Name one question worth asking yourself before you post something.

Any of these count: would I be okay with an unexpected person seeing this, does it share my exact location, could it embarrass me or someone else later, and am I posting it because I want to.

What to remember
  • What you post online can be very hard to fully take back.
  • Your digital footprint is everything you leave behind, on purpose or without thinking about it.
  • A short pause before posting can save real trouble later.
